In a quest to paint from the inside out and avoid overworking pieces, I developed the following approach.
Phase 1: Wind myself up, pick music, brushes and a few paint colors, and "paint like nobody's watching" to totally fill a canvas - say 3x4' - in 30–60 minutes.
Phase 2: Sit back, look at the chaos on my canvas, turn the canvas, look again, put it aside… until images appear.
Phase 3: Carefully pull out the images while leaving the original energy and many brush strokes intact.
Each phase requires a totally different mental state!
